Updated on : Thu, 28 Jul 2011 23:25:29 +0000 The devastating floods in Pakistan have damaged almost 8000 schools across the country, according to United Nations estimates. About 5000 other schools have become shelters for the displaced. This means that children who were not affected by the floods will not be able to continue their education, at least for the time being. The UN says it plans to meet schooling needs by setting up temporary learning spaces in camps, while the government of Sindh province announced plans to enroll students in cities unaffected by flood. Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Hyderabad, the second largest city in Sindh province. At least 1.5 million people have been affected, and the rains are expected to worsen this week. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society, which has branches and volunteers across the country, has been helping survivors since the flooding began by delivering food, health services, shelter and relief items (including hygiene kits and cooking equipment). Pakistan Red Crescent volunteers are also supporting the Pakistani authorities in a major rescue effort to reach thousands of communities that have been completely cut off by the floods. The British Red Cross has donated an initial £50000 from its Disaster Fund, but the needs are significant and the scale of the disaster is not yet clear. We urgently need your help to support the relief effort. More than a million people have also been affected by the floods that have bloated rivers, submerged villages, and triggered landslides throughout the northwest of the country. Rescue workers were struggling to reach people who were stranded by the flooding, thought to be the worst in the region since 1929. Pakistani TV on Friday showed images of people clinging to fences and other stationary items as water gushed over their heads. Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman, reporting from Pakistan's capital Islamabad, said the city experienced "a deluge of water" that came in from Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa [the new name for North West Frontier Province]. "The floods have really affected the infrastructure in and around the province," our correspondent said. "The people in the affected areas were quite critical in the first 24 hours, saying that the authorities were not doing enough. "The problem has been getting the help to them," he said.
