Plan is on the ground helping children hit by the worst flooding in Pakistan for 80 years. At least 1700 people have been killed and 15000000 people are caught up in the crisis. Our teams in Southern Punjab and Sindh have already distributed cooked food to over 114000 people, provided health and hygiene kits, set up tents and installed water handpumps in camps.

With funding from the Governments of the United Kingdom, the USA, the European Union and Japan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently began large-scale distribution of illumination's Mandarin Ultra solar lights in the Hyderabad region of Pakistan. The lights are being given to families left homeless by the devastating floods which swept through the area in July 2010 and again in August of 2011, and are being included in relief packs instead of the traditional kerosene lamp. This program constitutes the largest distribution program for solar lights into a disaster affected area to date.

Many Pakistani flood victims remain angry at the lack of help they have received from the government. The army, however, has been praised for its relief and rescue efforts, though it has been overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the disaster. Jonah Hull travelled with the military in flood-ravaged Central Punjab and reports now on the huge task ahead.

Ten years of rain fell in one week, 20 million people were affected, 14 million needed immediate humanitarian assistance. At the height of the crisis the water spanned an area the size of England. Six months on, the vast majority of people who were forced to flee from the floods have returned home. But many families have lost everything and the humanitarian challenge is shifting as people rejoin their communities.
