Oxfam is calling on the government to introduce comprehensive land reforms, especially for women, as part of a wider recovery and reconstruction plan, and to prevent families from being pushed further back into a spiral of poverty. - June 2011 -

Pakistan floods affect more than 3 million people‎

timesofearth.com - Reports suggest help has so far been slow to arrive, with criticism rising of the pace of the government response. ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN -- The worst floods in memory in Pakistan have affected more than three million people so far and the death toll has climbed to over 1500, the UN Children's Fund (Unicef) has said. Amid forecasts of more heavy monsoon rains, authorities on Tuesday said they expected the death toll to rise further. The Swat valley, which has yet to recover from a major Pakistani army offensive against Taliban fighters just over a year ago, is one of the areas worst affected by the floods. Large parts of the valley's upper regions, reached by a riverside road, are inaccessible. Scores of bridges, roads and building have been washed away by the torrents. Swat is in northwestern Pakistan, hit the hardest by the floods which submerged extensive areas, brought down bridges and swept away entire villages. Martin Mogwanja, the Unicef representative in Pakistan, told AFP news agency that the number of people affected continues to increase as the floods spread to the south of the country. "This massive amount of water is moving downstream through the Punjab and Baluchistan provinces, and also moving through the Sindh province, where embankments have been broken and water is moving into to low-lying areas," Mogwanja said. Other relief agencies such as the World Health Organisation said they were rushing in medical kits to affected areas to deal ...

Pakistan floods - Angelina Jolie 2010 appeal - spsyed analysis

Pakistan floods - Angelina Jolie appeal. UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has pledged her support to help victims of Pakistan's super floods of the century. It is worse than the entire population hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake, Cyclone Nargis and the earthquake in Haiti, combined. The massive challenge was too huge for any government or party to undertake on its own. Some 12 per cent of the population, over 20 million people, have been affected by one of the worst catastrophes in Pakistan's history. More than eight million need food, shelter and water. The distribution of aid cannot keep pace with the sheer scale of the massive disaster. The super floods, triggered by torrential monsoon rains in July-August 2010, engulfed Pakistan's Indus river basin, killing over 3000 people. The floods of the century have ravaged Pakistan. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited Pakistan to assess the clossal damage caused by the devastating super floods. Ban urged the international community to speed up its assistance to Pakistan. He spoke on the urgent need of over 20 million people affected by the super floods. While the severity of the needs of the Pakistan floods victims has not yet been fully assessed, the number is greater than those who were affected by the 2005 South Asia tsunami (5 ...
