Pakistan flood victims build makeshift transport

For two weeks many children in Pakistan's Swat Valley have been isolated from their parents and the sick unable to get medical help as all the bridges over the river Swat were destroyed by the heavy flooding. The military has taken the lead in trying to restore transport links but for now locals have created large baskets on pulleys to move people across the river, with 700 people a day using it. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from Swat in northwest Pakistan.

Pakistan floods - 6 months on

In 2010 Pakistan was hit by its worst natural disaster. More than 1750 people are thought to have died, with an estimated 20 million people affected by the floods. In the six months since the floods hit Pakistan, Oxfam has: - Helped almost 1.9 million people. - Provided more than 1 million people with clean water. - Built sanitation facilities for over 860000 people. - Provided hygiene kits for over 1.3 million people, and hygiene advice to over 900000 people. - Provided financial grants to more than 300000 people to help them provide for their families. - Organised cash-for-work schemes and provided 118892 people with money for their immediate needs. - Distributed 12000 winter kits -- blankets, jumpers, quilts -- in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. - Provided emergency shelter to over 225000 people. Pakistan floods 2010 made millions homeless -- spsyed analysis. Over 20 million people have been affected by serious torrents flooding in Pakistan where people need bare basics, such as clean drinking water, food, tents, shelters, blankets as well as medical aid, mosquito nets, sanitation equipment and generators to avert a public health catastrophe. The biblical scenes show a tip of the iceberg as the heavy monsoon rains continue to fall across the country, and as floods wash away almost everything in its path. Mud and land slides have swept away hundreds of roads and bridges and many parts of Pakistan are cut off, hampering and frustrating relief efforts. Pakistan has seen nothing like it in its history -- it is the worst flooding in 80 years since 1930. A region the size of England has been flooded. It is a mega disaster that is worse than 2004 tsunami and October 2005 earthquake. The worst floods to hit the region in 80 years could get worse, as it is only midway through monsoon season. Pakistan floods 2010 rank in one of the worst ever. More than 1500000 homes have so far been destroyed across Pakistan, 2.5m acres (994642 hectares) of agricultural crops (worth over US $2 billions) land have been flooded and 50000 cows have died in the 800 miles long, up to 15-feet high and up to 50 miles wide floods that has submerged hundreds of villages in the country, drowning and killing more than 5000 people and injuring over 60000.
