United Nations, New York, 16 August 2010 - Waterborne diseases continue to pose great risk to millions of people affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan, the United Nations warned today, a day after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, on a visit to the country, described the "heart-wrenching" suffering he witnessed among flood survivors. Mr. Ban pledged that the UN would do all it can to help survivors of the floods, which have affected an estimated 20 million people across Pakistan and left more than 1200 dead and at least 2 million homeless. In September 2010, John Ayearst was part of the Canadian GlobalMedic Rapid Response Team deployed to flood-stricken Pakistan. Partnered with Islamic Help UK, we brought field hospitals, millions of water purification tablets, oral rehydration salts, medicines and food. With Trekker, Explorer and Nomad water purification units we made more than 120000 litres per day of safe drinking water. As USAID marks World Humanitarian Day, we continue around-the-clock efforts to support Pakistanis affected by the epic flooding in the country's south and west. The scale of the disaster remains astounding, with millions already displaced. USAID-supplied plastic sheeting, enough to provide shelter for 7800 families, has just arrived. Each of these families will also receive an emergency shelter package containing a 20-liter water container, blankets, rope, and a kitchen set. We are also keeping a close eye out on minimizing waterborne diseases, through educational campaigns as well as expanded water monitoring. Since late July, USAID has provided immediate assistance from the American people to the flood-affected people of Pakistan. An artificial lake formed by a landslide in January in Pakistan's northern Hunza Valley is still threatening to burst its banks. Dozens of villages in the mountaneous border area are potentially at risk of flooding, forcing some 2000 people to evacuate.
